Prophecy: The Testimony of Jesus and Why the Gifts of the Spirit Matter

Prophecy often carries messages that come through as images or pictures that God presents. It is not only Old Testament prognostication, or crystal-ball style predictions. None of that captures the whole picture. Prophecy, at its core, is how God communicates with us. It is the testimony of Jesus and a living way the Holy Spirit teaches, comforts, corrects, and guides the Church today.
What prophecy really is
Think of prophecy as God’s supernatural communications media, as so eloquently stated by Dr. Paula Price of The Prophet's Dictionary.
That definition reminds us of two important truths:
• Prophecy is inspired communication from God. It can involve predictive elements, but prediction is only one part of it.
• Prophecy primarily reveals the testimony and heart of Jesus. It points people toward Christ, helps them grow, and brings the Father’s instruction into practical life.
Dr. Paula Price puts it nicely when she defines prophecy as an inspired communication from God. That captures the breadth of prophecy, which can include foretelling but also delivers exhortation, instruction, warning, and comfort.
The Bible nails the priority of prophecy
“The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.” That line is a sharp reminder: prophecy is not an optional curiosity. It’s central to knowing Jesus. The Holy Spirit—our Comforter and Teacher—carries the testimony of Jesus into our lives. When we silence or quench that work, we miss a primary pathway God uses to form and mature us.
Common misconceptions to clear up
“Prophets were only for the Old Testament” — Not true. The New Testament repeatedly affirms prophecy as important in the current Church age.
• “Prophecy is only about predicting future events” — Prediction exists, but many prophetic words are for strengthening, encouragement, instruction, and warning right now.
• “The prophetic is dangerous because of deception” — Discernment is essential, but fear should not drive us to mute the Spirit. Scripture calls us to test, prove, and mature in recognizing what is authentic.
How the Holy Spirit communicates
The Spirit speaks in many ways. The variety is part of God’s kindness—he meets people where they are, by language and imagery they can receive.
• Dreams and night-time visitation
• Inner impressions or an audible phrase
• Visual images or movies played in the imagination
• Scripture that “jumps off the page” with fresh meaning
• Words given through other people—prophetic encouragement, warning, or instruction
People describe receiving these impressions differently. Some “read” a ticker-tape of truth; others see a scene like a short movie. All of these are valid ways God reveals truth when the heart is tuned to him.
Key Scriptures that shape prophetic practice
Several New Testament passages make the present role and purpose of prophecy clear:
• 1 Corinthians 13:8–13 — Prophecies and gifts will eventually pass away when perfection arrives, but they are still needed now for training, equipping, and pointing people to Jesus.
• Isaiah 40:5 — A future day is promised when God’s glory will be universally revealed; until then, prophetic ministry helps ready the people of God.
• Colossians 2:10 — We are complete in Christ, and prophetic revelation helps the body grow into that completeness and purpose.
• 2 Peter 1:19–21 — Pay attention to prophetic word; true prophecy is not a product of human will but of men moved by the Holy Spirit.
• Romans 16:26 — Prophetic scripture has been disclosed to bring people into faith; prophecy is part of the scriptural mandate to the nations.
• 1 Thessalonians 5:20 — “Do not despise prophecies.” Prophecies are spoken revelations: instruction, exhortation, or warning—meant to train, equip, and build up the church.
• 1 Corinthians 14:3 — The one who prophesies speaks for strengthening, encouragement, and comfort.
• Nehemiah 6:2 — A cautionary example: not every “prophetic” word is from God. Discernment matters.
Why the gifts matter now
We live in an in-between time. The fullness of what Paul calls perfection has not yet arrived. Until that day, prophetic gifts are tools God uses to:
• Train and equip the saints
• Bring correction and protection
• Encourage and strengthen
• Advance the gospel into nations and spheres of influence
To reject prophecy is to reject a primary way God shapes his people. Scripture warns against quenching the Spirit. That is not a call to reckless operation, but to responsible openness and training.
Practical steps to cultivate healthy prophetic sensitivity
1. Learn to test and prove. Don’t reactively dismiss prophetic words. Test them, wait for confirmation, and allow the Holy Spirit time to clarify.
2. Be teachable and humble. Growth in hearing God is a process. Honor small words and steward what God gives you so he can give more.
3. Create margins of quiet. The Spirit often speaks when we slow down— dreams, scripture illumination, and gentle nudges come in quiet places.
4. Work on inner healing and discernment. Wounds and strong conditioning can distort what we hear. Healing helps clear our filters.
5. Use Scripture as the primary measure. Prophetic words must align with the character and testimony of Jesus and sound teaching.
6. Respond with love. Prophetic correction or warning is meant to build up; respond in humility and grace, not with defensiveness.
7. Practice in community. Confirmation from others and mentorship sharpen prophetic giftings and protect against error.
Warnings and balance
Prophecy can be misused. False prophecy exists, and some misuse prophetic words for control or manipulation. That’s why Scripture instructs us to test prophecies and to watch for fruit—does a word produce love, righteousness, and edification? Healthy prophetic ministry is identifiable by its humility, its alignment with Scripture, and its purpose: to point people to Jesus and help them mature in Him.
Final reminders
Prophecy is not an extra; it’s a lifeline. It is how the testimony of Jesus keeps being proclaimed in fresh, personal, and practical ways. The Holy Spirit speaks—through dreams, images, Scripture, and people—to teach, correct, and encourage.
If you long for deeper intimacy with Jesus, take prophecy seriously. Learn to listen. Test what you hear. Be teachable. Guard against deception without closing your heart to God’s voice. The gifts are here to equip you until the day when God’s glory is fully revealed, and every heart sees Him face to face.
Stay sensitive. Remain humble. Love well. And let the testimony of Jesus shape your life.
