Understanding the Preparation for Prophetic Expression
God prepares people for their calling. This is especially true for those moving into the prophetic. When you feel a call to share God’s heart, you must go through a process. This process cleans your heart and changes how you think. It is not always easy, but it is necessary. You cannot carry the weight of a spiritual gift with excellence without the right character.
Cleaning Out Your Spiritual Filters
The first step in prophetic preparation involves cleaning your "filters." These filters are the things in your heart and soul that change how you hear God. If your heart is full of pain or wrong ideas, you might miss what the Spirit is saying. One of the biggest issues to deal with is the religious spirit. Many people grow up in systems that teach them to think a certain way. They might use scripture to judge others or hide behind rules. This creates a wall around the heart. This wall makes it hard to hear the Holy Spirit clearly.
Breaking the Default Response
For some, religious talk is a defense mechanism. It becomes a "spiritual muscle memory." When they feel afraid or challenged, they spout verses without love. This is a default setting that God wants to change. He gave us brains to reason and hearts to feel. He wants us to be authentic with Him. He is not surprised by our anger or fear. He wants to clear those things out so we can see Him as He really is.
The Difference Between the Word and the Spirit
There are two ways to look at God's word. The first is the written word, often called the Logos. The second is the "Rhema" word. This is when the Spirit breathes life into a verse. It makes the truth jump off the page. It applies directly to your life in that exact moment.
Why Practical Application Matters
Knowing the Bible is good, but you must know how to use it. Many people learn facts in church but do not know how to live them out. A prophetic person needs the Spirit to show them how to apply truth to daily decisions. Without the Spirit, the written word can feel cold or harsh. With the Spirit, it becomes a life vest that keeps you from drowning.
Dealing with Pride and Idolatry
Preparation also deals with the ego. Many people start their journey thinking they are already solid. They believe they have enough training. Then, God starts to chip away at their pride. He reveals the things they are truly worshiping. Common idols of the heart include:
- The desire for money.
- Focusing only on a promise of wealth.
- Relationships
- Making marriage or children the only goal.
- Position
- Wanting to be a leader or a "right-hand person" for the wrong reasons.
- Self-Idolatry
- Thinking your own way is the only right way.
These idols can lead to "spiritual witchcraft." This happens when someone tries to manipulate God to get what they want. They pull on the Spirit to get a specific word that fits their own plan. God wants to strip these things away so you can focus on His heart instead.
Facts Versus Truth
In the prophetic, we must learn the difference between facts and truth. Facts are often based on what we see or what experts say. For example, a doctor might give a diagnosis based on symptoms. These are the facts of the moment. However, the Truth is what God says about the situation. Truth requires the breath of God. If we only look at the facts, we miss the bigger picture. We need the "salt and light" of the Spirit to see reality through God's eyes. He is the truth.
Navigating the Prophetic Journey
The prophetic is a journey, not a final destination. It involves growth and discipline. You must be teachable. If you are not willing to change, you might disqualify yourself from higher levels of ministry.
Learning from Joseph’s Mistakes
Think about Joseph in the Bible. He had a dream that his family would bow to him. He told them the dream, and it caused major problems. He did not know the timing or the full story yet. Sometimes, God tells you something great about your future. You might think it will happen tomorrow. You might think you know exactly how it will look. Often, God uses metaphors. A "child" might be a business. A "partnership" might look different than you thought. If you try to force the outcome, you will get into trouble.
The Price of the Mantle
Many people want the power of a prophet, but do not want the pain that is the subsequent result. When Elisha asked Elijah for a double portion of his spirit, Elijah said it was a difficult request. He wasn't saying God was stingy. He was saying the weight of that gift is heavy. It takes great maturity to carry it. Prophetic people often pay a high price. They must be willing to make mistakes and stay humble. Humility is your best weapon against the enemy. It keeps you safe under God’s protection.
Releasing God’s Love Language
The goal of the prophetic is to share God’s heart's intent. When a word is truly from God, it acts like a "kiss" from heaven. It should do three things:
1. Edify: Build the person up.
2. Encourage: Give them hope.
3. Comfort: Let them know they are loved.
Even if a word is a correction, it should not feel like condemnation. It should feel like a deep level of love. It should help the person breathe again.
Conclusion
Preparation is a constant process. Even experienced leaders are still cleaning their filters and learning new things. God is patient and kind as He works with us. He trims away the things that do not serve us well. He wants us to move away from fear and control and move toward intimacy. If you are called to the prophetic, stay teachable. Be willing to go through the process of character building. Allow God to remove your religious systems and replace them with His heart. When you do, your words will bring life to everyone around you. Are you ready to let God clean your filters? Take a moment to ask Him what idols might be hiding in your heart. Stay humble and keep seeking His light and direction.
